Description of the Skills System Certificate of Specialized Proficiency Program

The Skills System certificate program is designed to help practitioners and agencies have tangible goals related to Skills System implementation. The Certificate of Specialized Proficiency evaluates competency. This means that the individual learns the basics and practices utilizing Skills System concepts in the agency setting over a period of time (receiving feedback is optimal) prior to earning the certificate. There are multiple steps in these progressions that can guide professional development and agency effectiveness.

Skills Coach

The Skills System certificate program has three levels. The first is a Certificate of Specialized Proficiency: Skills Coach. Although there are no specific training requirements, competency in the Skills System concepts and skills coaching techniques outlined in The Emotion Regulation Skills System for the Cognitively Challenged Clients (Brown, 2016) are necessary. Earning this certificate involves passing three online tests (90% correct or better), completing an application, submitting a supervisor’s recommendation, and passing a coded 45-minute video-conferenced oral exam (85% or better) with the treatment developer. Having a staff earn the Certificate of Specialized Proficiency: Skills Coach helps ensures that he/she understands the Skills System emotion regulation skills concepts and are able to communicate how to use skills coaching techniques in context. There is a $250 fee to cover the exam/processing time. A certificate is active for five years. An up-date oral exam is required to extend the certificate for each two-year period. There is a $250 cost for an update.

A professional independent license in a field of clinical practice (e.g. psychology, social work, mental health counselor) is required. Having staff earn the Certificate of Specialized Proficiency: Skills Group Leader helps ensure that he/she understand the Skills System teaching techniques. Group leaders often conduct intra-agency Skills System staff trainings to prepare staff to be skills coaches. There is a $250 fee to cover the oral exam/processing time. The cost of the video review/adherence coding is billed separately. A Certificate of Specialized Proficiency: Skills Group Leader is active for five years. An up-date oral exam is required to extend the certificate for each four-year period.
